The story about a family of St. John's worts, whose job it is to shine a light on people at night, was first published in 1876 and, thanks to the unceasing popularity of readers, has already seen more than a hundred editions. The poetic stories of the Broučk family have inspired many artists, especially Jiří Trnka, and have been transferred to the movie screen several times. The main character is the naughty little Brouček, who has his own head and doesn't listen to his parents and Aunt Janinka, although he often pays for it. The author of the beetles, Jan Karafiát, was an evangelical priest, and "The Beetles" are an allegorical depiction of a family that lives according to Christian values, in harmony with nature.
