A novel treatment of the troubled fates of Věra Saudková in the dramatic twists of the 20th century
Věra Saudková was not only the niece of Franz Kafka, but the wife and inspirer of the famous translator of Shakespeare's work E. A. Saudek, mother of five children, talented translator, support of many people who found themselves in need, and above all a wise and brave personality.
She lived almost a hundred years, and her complex and very difficult fate resembled in many respects the fate of our country in the twentieth century. Whenever there was hope for better times, something came along that dashed that hope. However, it was not only the turbulent circumstances of political development that this sensitive woman had to deal with. Unfortunately, Kafka's worst visions were also matched by tragic events and painful losses of her family members. Three times she had a real possibility to emigrate, to leave Prague, which brought her more sorrow than joy, but she never did. The bond that bound her to her ancestral place was stronger than her desire for freedom.
