Facsimile of Jiří Bouda's diary entries from his bicycle journey to Santiago de Compostela
Facsimile of the first diary from the pilgrimage journey to Santiago de Compostela, which Jiří Bouda undertook by bicycle from the church of St. Matej in Prague-Dejvice. After reaching the destination - the pilgrimage church of St. James in Compostela, Spain - he planned to return by train. He had already bought a ticket in advance, but the railway workers there were on strike, so going home by rail was not possible. He looked for an alternative mode of transport and the Czech bus, which was half-empty on the way back from Spain, took him and his bicycle home.
Jiří Bouda not only wrote down everything on his journey, but of course also drew, as drawing was his basic means of expression. He perceived the beauty of the world around him, the countryside, unknown cities, met interesting people. His drawings faithfully capture the landscape and architecture and are a unique document about the time, people, cities and buildings. Jiří Bouda was a virtuoso and precise documentarian, he had a sure hand and a pure heart.
The handwritten notebook, which is a work of art in itself, also contains the so-called test journey that Jiří Bouda completed before he set out on a long way to Spain. It led from Prague to Slovakia and back home via Austria.
