The long return is an extremely engaging, poetic and harsh story of Jozef Vinich, a Slovak immigrant who returns to Košice with his father from Colorado after a family tragedy. He enlists in the Austro-Hungarian army, survives the battles on the Piave and ends up in Italian captivity. After many vicissitudes, he returns home. However, his journey does not end - he gets an American passport in Prague and definitively leaves war-ravaged Europe.
The suggestive story, reminiscent of The English Patient and Cold Mountain, shows not only the "forgotten" events of the First World War, but above all the power of human destiny and the will to survive even in extremely difficult circumstances.
