The villainous adventurer Artigas, who got rich by stealing underwater treasures, kidnapped Professor Roch, the discoverer of an effective explosive, and intends to use his invention to dominate the world.
The young professor's assistant, Eng. Hart, intends to prevent the evil son from his plans at all costs. He saves freedom for humanity and the love of the professor's charming daughter Jana for himself. Karel Zeman's famous film was created in 1958 based on Jules Verne's novels and using the artwork of the original Verne illustrators Rion and Bennett. The combination of cartoon and live-action film achieved an extraordinary unification here thanks to a detailed artistic concept that started with the cartoon backdrops and ended with the costumes and masks of the actors. The charm of this film, which ranks among world classics, was also underlined by František Hrubín's poetic script with witty, light-hearted dialogues by Milan Vácha and Jiří Brdečka.
