The novel The German Girl is inspired by the stories of passengers, Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, who arrived on the ocean liner St. Louis tries to get to safety. However, no country, led by their original destination Cuba, wants to accept them. In the end, only a handful of the crowd of almost a thousand on board will set foot on the Caribbean island.
The life of eleven-year-old Hannah Rosenthal was like a fairy tale. Therefore, Hannah and her best friend Leo make a deal - no matter where fate takes them, it's important to stay together. The cruise is a moment of respite for the passengers, however disturbing rumors from Cuba soon cloud the festive atmosphere of the cruise.
