Golem and his creator, Rabbi Löw, are the main characters of Karel Štorkán's three-part historical novel. The Jewish community during the reign of Rudolph II. rise up. The emperor kept a protective hand over the Jews because their primate Maisel lent him money for everything he needed. Still, their life was not easy. The wealth of Jewish merchants attracted robbers who did not hesitate to kill for gold. During the plague, the emperor went to Pilsen and the Jewish community was left without protection. This is precisely why Rabbi Löw decided to create the Golem — the protector of the Jewish City. All the threads of the various destinies of the ghetto inhabitants point to the Golem, to whom the learned Rabbi Löw transferred his inner strength. The golem protects the Jewish Town even at the time when the benefactor Maisel died and his dizzying wealth was appropriated by Emperor Rudolf. Nevertheless, Rabbi Löw finally put the Golem to sleep, because it could become a great temptation for many.
