The Ice Sphinx is another science fiction adventure novel from the Strange Journeys series. The book is written as a sequel to the novel The Tales of Arthur Gordon Pym by the American poet Edgar Allan Poe, who was one of Verne's favorite authors.
The novel is told by the American traveler Joerlink, who in August 1839 on the Kerguelen Islands boards Captain Len Guy's ship Halbran. On the way to the Falklands, he discovers that Captain Guy is convinced that Poe's novel is based on true facts and that the ship is on an expedition to Antarctica to rescue the rest of the crew of the schooner Jana, on which Arthur Gordon Pym sailed and captained by William Guy he is Captain Len's brother.
Joerlink eventually joins the rescue mission.
