Today the commissioner is worried. Who knows if it would have been nicer to him if Maigret hadn't bent down and cushioned the blow at the right moment? How on earth could this novice reveal all that he revealed?

Every beginning is difficult. The year is 1913, and the twenty-six-year-old Maigret has made it to the commissioner's secretary after four years with the police. But he is not satisfied with the work at the crime scene: he would like to go higher, to the homicide department on Zlatnické nábřeží! When he is on a grueling shift one night, a battered young man arrives at the police station after hearing a call for help and a shooting at the residence of a wealthy family. Maigret sets out on his own to investigate the incident. Little does he know that he is opening his first case, in which he will disrupt the unwritten agreements between privileged circles and law enforcement.
