Many remember the 73rd as another year when Husák's normalization took place and more children were born than the year before. Public life was possible mainly in the organizations of the communist National Front, so people focused more on family, cottages and perhaps traveling around the Czech homeland.
Mothers with children could stay on paid maternity leave for a new three years, which was welcomed by young families and the population of Czech and Slovak towns and villages grew happily. Another novelty was the introduction of routing numbers, which had to be on every postal item. This was a rise in established socialist orders.
We drove in Skodas and Trabants, whoever had more money waited for a licensed Fiat, i.e. a Soviet Zhigulik. Olga Hepnarová, who deliberately drove a truck onto a tram island full of people with the aim of killing as many as possible, caused quite a stir. Unfortunately, she succeeded.
There was an unprecedented search for energy in the world, mainly for diesel. It became more expensive several times, and motorists in the West were experiencing a unique situation: there was no gasoline, and if there was, it was expensive. Several classic evergreens were filmed in music and film, such as Noc na Karlštejně or Cinderella. Karel Gott was the Golden Nightingale for the tenth time in a row and sweetened his coffee.
Some of us were young then, and the world is always beautiful, whatever the political situation. So let's remember that time and if you don't match, it doesn't matter at all.
