Mieko Kawakami, author of the bestseller Breasts and Eggs, is considered the most outstanding Japanese writer today. She won the Japanese literary award (Murasaki Shikibu Prize) for her novel Heaven and was shortlisted for the Booker International Prize (2022). The reader recognizes the novel's protagonist and narrator, a fourteen-year-old high school student, by the nickname Šilhavec, given to him by his classmates. Because of this, he is also bullied at school. The boy suffers in silence in solitude until he strikes up a friendship with classmate Kodžimová - she is the only one who can understand what he is going through, as she is also the target of bullying. The world of a lonely, withdrawn boy suddenly changes when he has the opportunity to share his suffering, to discuss the reasons for bullying, the morality of bullies and victims. Kodžimová makes Šilhavec think about his own passivity in the face of violence, and attributes moral superiority, even certain victory, to those who become victims.
