It has been exactly half a century since an unpredictable natural disaster prematurely cut short the efforts of the Czechoslovak Peru 1970 expedition. An uncompromisingly destructive avalanche of ice and stones caused by an extensive earthquake in the South American White Cordillera mountains buried the efforts and goals of all its fourteen members in the base camp under Huascarán. Most of them grew up climbing among the sandstone towers of Skalák, and for many of them it was their first contact with high mountains. Mene tekel had already come two weeks before, when one of the members of the expedition tragically died. A devastating earthquake in the mountains claimed the lives of a total of seventy thousand Quechua Indians in a matter of minutes. However, the heart of the White Cordillera continues to beat.
