The famous English writer's first novel was published in 1915, and Woolf worked on it during an unusually difficult time for her, when she suffered from recurring depressions. The work retains the traditional form of a novel, but it already contains the seeds of what adorns the author's top work: an innovative narrative style, an insight into the female psyche, the theme of sexuality and death.
In 1920, Virginia Woolf wrote in her diary: "Every day from twelve to one I read The Voyage ... it is such a mixture of images - sometimes clear and serious - sometimes playful and shallow - sometimes true as the word of God - sometimes strong and flowing easily and perfectly... I blush with shame at the shortcomings, and then a sentence, a clairvoyantly expressed idea makes my cheeks burn with a completely different feeling. In fact, I have to admire the young woman: how bravely she throws herself over obstacles - and she can really write, that must be left to her!"
