Communist Czechoslovakia's strictly guarded borders with the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria became the scene of thousands of tragedies in which brave people tried to escape from the "camp of peace and socialism" surrounded by barbed wire. The Czech wall of death and its creator, How men turned into frogs, Merge with the tree trunk or Slovak Ikaros - the names of the book's chapters sound rather surreal in the current context, but in the years 1948-1989 they referred to a mercilessly bloody reality and confirmed the extraordinary ingenuity of people yearning for life in freedom. The renowned columnist comments on four dozen examples of repression by the regime, which, according to the statistics of the time, succeeded in thwarting more than 90 percent of escapes "for small amounts", and presents them as a memento for a time that has already begun to suffer from memory loss even at the political level.
