Saint Benedict is usually depicted in a religious habit with an abbot's crutch, sometimes also with a mitre. He is often depicted with a book (Rules) in his hand.
Individual attributes are based on episodes II. the book of Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great: a broken sieve for cleaning grain (Benedict's nanny broke it due to inattention, it was made whole again by Benedict's prayer) a broken cup (chalice) from which a small snake or a winged dragon climbs out (the Vicovar monks gave their the abbot's goblet with poisoned wine, Benedict blessed the vessel, it shattered and the poisoned wine flowed out) the raven (he took away the poisoned bread at the saint's command). In some depictions, Benedict is surrounded by a circle of light (orb), referring to the saint's mystical vision.
