New edition of the popular guide. Rome offers majestic ancient monuments, sacred pilgrimage sites of the Catholic Church, unique works by Michelangelo or Raphael and countless others. The main monuments are concentrated in a relatively small area, most of them can be easily covered on foot. The pace of Roman life will force you to slow down and enjoy the city and the mixed drinks in delicious sips.
Overview of Roman attractions: Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Vatican and many more.
From fashion boutiques to classical music concerts: how to make the most of your free time.
Emperors, popes and politicians: look into Rome's past and present.
Where to stay, eat and how to travel: reliable recommendations and expert advice.
Visitors to Rome soon discover that cultural monuments from different eras are often linked: a pagan mausoleum doubles as a papal fortress, a medieval church has a baroque facade, and a Renaissance palace overlooks a modern transport hub. It doesn't matter if you came to Rome for the majestic ancient monuments, the sacred pilgrimage sites of the Catholic Church or the unique works of Michelangelo, Raphael or Bernini - in the end you will still see everything.
Although Rome is quite vast, the main monuments are concentrated in a relatively small area. Most of them can be easily reached on foot. A large part of the historic center is closed to traffic, parking here is basically impossible. Rome's public transport has improved noticeably over the last few years. Even if the roads are crowded at peak times, you can usually get where you want to go fairly quickly.
Start your tour of Rome in Trastevere at Caffe delle Arance. Follow Via Garibaldi to Piazzale Garibaldi and enjoy the view from the top of the Janiculum Hill. Take the winding streets of Trastevere towards Piazza Trilussa and the Tiber River; visit boutiques and galleries along the way. Be sure to visit Nicola Salvi's Baroque gem, the Trevi Fountain. Don't miss a visit to the Colosseum from the 1st century and be impressed by its massive structure.
The pace of Roman life will force you to slow down and enjoy the city in delicious sips. For example, you will find out very quickly that there is no point in wandering around the sights in the afternoon heat in the summer. It is better to follow the locals into the shade of the local parks, soak up the atmosphere in one of the historic squares, and at the same time keep refreshing yourself with excellent mixed drinks. For example, have a grattachecca, which is actually crushed ice flavored with fruit juice, or a creamy fruit cocktail frullato.
