Summer idyll reigns in the peaceful country town of Tommerup on the Danish island of Fyn. Charlotte, a young mother of two young children, disappears one morning on her way to the school where she works. Her distraught husband comes to Odense police to report her missing, but Police Inspector Liam Stark and Commissioner Dea Torp decide not to launch a search as the woman has only been gone for a few hours.

However, the next morning the woman is still not at home and it soon becomes clear that she has become the victim of a crime.
In the following days, the case grows to such proportions that people all over Funen are afraid to leave their homes, lest they become another of the disappeared.

Liam and Dea fight against time, caught in a merciless game where people die agonizing deaths and the police can only watch helplessly.
