The current form of the rosary is demonstrably from the 13th century, from 1208. It was introduced by Saint Dominic not only for the monastic Order of Friars Preachers (Dominicans) founded by him and not only as a way of reciting prayers. The original intention was to create an accessible prayer for the laity imitating the psalter, which was a widespread devotion in monasteries.
