Katarína returns from Prague to her native Bratislava for the Christmas holidays to spend some time with her parents and brother. However, two members are missing from the Christmas board: Dora, her older sister, who has been living in the USA for several years, and Katarína's Czech husband, Evžen. While the family has been ignoring Dořa's absence for a long time and acting as if she didn't even exist, Katarína has to explain Evžen's sudden absence. And the fact that her husband hasn't been sleeping at home for two months and she doesn't really know where he is, probably won't be enough. The separation between the main character and her husband parallels the velvet divorce between the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. A story about the absence that weighs, about the desires we are afraid to express, about betrayal and the complex search for oneself. Slovak author Jana Karšaiová chose Italian as her literary language and was nominated for the prestigious Strega Award in 2022 for her novel Velvet Divorce.
