A story about growing up in a region that no one would have invented. Podlasie, a forested region between Poland and Belarus, is somewhat of a forgotten region. To this day, it is surrounded by legends and mists, in which strange people live at first glance — they have their faith, poverty and whispers: women who can heal. Or they can't, but everyone believes it. Her best friend accompanies the reader through the story of the undertaker's daughter Dorothy growing up in a magical region. The phenomenon of borders and their (un)crossability is as persistent as the chorus of a nineties hit from MTV. The world of the living merges with the world of the dead, Christian piety with pagan whispering traditions, modern Western cultural impulses merge with local folklore. The heroines of the novel are driven by an unstoppable desire to leave, to cross the border, to break free. But no matter where they go, they will always take the experience of life on the periphery with them.
