A man's body is found deep in a cave beneath the Yorkshire Dales National Park in northern England. The investigation of the strange death is led by the experienced Chief Inspector Jim Oldroyd with his younger colleague Carter, a newcomer from London.

The victim of the murder is Dave Atkins from nearby Burnthwaite, where too many people had reason to dislike him, or even hate him. There is no shortage of suspects, but the circumstances of the crime do not make sense to Oldroyd and Carter. How did Atkins' body end up in such a remote part of the cave? Then, when a person who could provide important information on the case dies, it becomes clear that the killer will stop at nothing.

Oldroyd and his men try to uncover the truth, but every answer only raises new questions. The closed rural community seems to be full of secrets and lies. Oldroyd and Carter soon discover that this case will be darker and more complicated than the caves hidden underground.
