Even the most unconnected families have secrets.

Famous novelist Sara Medlar can tell stories about other people, but she hopes the truth about her family will never come out. The home in Lachlan, Florida is her sanctuary, which she shares with her niece Kate and dear friend Jack Wyatt. The Medlar trio, as they are called in the town, have promised themselves that they will not get involved in any more murder investigations.
After the sheriff unexpectedly goes on vacation, Jack is surprised to learn that he has been appointed as his deputy. So when Kate stumbles upon a dead body during a visit, the Medlar Trio get back to work. In addition, at the real estate agency, Kate acquires a charming new client with a mysterious past. He seems to cause nothing but trouble, and Sara and Jack are nervous about him.
It doesn't take long for him to discover that there is some kind of connection between the murder and the new man in town - but the question is what. When the stranger's true identity is revealed, Sara realizes that her carefully crafted story is crumbling and fears that she will lose Kate and Jack forever.
