When we approached the front edge of the defense, the infantry told us that during the night they heard a clatter in the minefields to the north, like tank tracks turning slowly. We listened for a while but heard nothing. It was slowly dawning, but the ground was still foggy. We hadn't gone twenty paces when we heard two cannon shots close by almost simultaneously. We hit the ground and carefully looked around to see what it could be. About fifty meters from us we saw two tanks in the rising fog. One stood, the other backed away.
