In 1964, a student from the East and a student from the West fall in love at a youth festival in East Berlin. He helps her escape, they get married. Only after her death does the 70-year-old Kašpar learn what his wife Birgit has kept secret from him all her life: she gave birth to a daughter before fleeing and left her in the GDR. Kašpar does what she always wanted, but couldn't do - he looks for her. The search becomes a journey into the past and an encounter with the wounds and scars left by the GDR, the coup of 1989 and adaptation to the West. When he finds his daughter, she lives married in a neo-Nazi nationalist community in the countryside. Her fourteen-year-old daughter Sigrun is happy that her grandfather suddenly entered her life, just as he is happy about his granddaughter. But his world is as foreign to her as hers is to him. Can he get close to her?
