The story of the book takes place in the sixties of the nineteenth century, when the "land of furs", i.e. Canada, was the seat of several competing hunting companies. They tried to move their territories more and more to the north, where there was still a lot of rare game. And so Lieutenant Hobson is entrusted with the establishment of a new hunting station on the north coast of America, beyond the Arctic Circle.
He therefore takes a journey with a handful of soldiers and hunters from the Great Slave Lake to the Great Bear Lake and from there to the coast - at the seventieth degree of north latitude. Here, on the tip of a peninsula, they set up a hunting station. However, he has no idea that he is standing on a glacier covered with a layer of clay. Due to the volcanic tremor, the glacier breaks off and sails with the crew to the open sea, where it begins to slowly melt.
Driven by the sea current, it sails through the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska. At the last moment before the disaster, the remaining kra lands with people on one of the Aleutian islands. As is usual with Vern, the exciting story is complemented by a whole range of geographical and natural history interesting facts from the polar regions.
