When Berenger took refuge in a remote Benedictine monastery in the mountains years ago, he was primarily looking for refuge from persecution for himself and his brother Romuald. But he also found a new home in a small monastic community at the very end of the Christian world, where he could devote himself to the study of books and forget the burning past that had left scars on his body and soul.
At Easter 1322, however, old wounds begin to be painfully recalled. A hermit who was once a monk himself is murdered in close proximity to the monastery, and soon the angel of death makes his way even beyond the seemingly safe walls of Berenger's new home.
A murderer is prowling the monastery, and Berenger has more and more reason to believe that he is also seeking his life.
The historical detective story Confessions of the Last Monk takes the reader to the troubled beginnings of the 14th century, when medieval Europe was plagued by hunger, civil wars and religious disputes.
