Great Central European fantasy novel
In his novel, Radek Rak delves into the mythology of ancient Galicia, in which historical figures and events are overgrown with legends.
We follow the fate of the young Jakub Szela, who becomes a bandit and the leader of the peasant revolt against the nobility in 1846. However, Raka's book brings readers closer to the need for myth and mythic narrative, which modern society is moving away from, much more than historical facts. We move on the border between history and mythology — seemingly dead things come to life, fairies and wise snakes intervene in people's destinies. At the same time, however, Jakub Szela's story tells about social injustice, which is relevant in almost every era. Radek Rak wrote a novel about good and evil, which is hidden in each of us, about unequal opportunities, about Galicia and Poland — and all this in an unusually colorful language.
