When well-known Melbourne developer Mickey Franklin is shot dead with his own gun, suspicion immediately falls on his girlfriend, sculptor Sara Longmore. Motive for murder? Mickey allegedly cheated on her with her younger sister Sophia. But Sarah's lawyer Drew Greer is convinced of her innocence, so he turns to his former colleague Jack Irish to investigate the case.

Jack has long known that trouble can find him on their own, and he soon discovers that even with this job, nothing will change. The circumstances of Mickey's death are not nearly as clear as the police make them out to be, and going against the official investigation means getting into trouble with powerful people on both sides of the law.
