Bearer of four Czechoslovak military crosses and the British Distinguished Flying Cross, Knight of the French Legion of Honor, bearer of the Soviet Order of Victory and many other awards, General František Fajtl left us an amazing literary testimony. In his first book "Sestrelen" he described his wartime adventure, which continues to fascinate us. On May 5, l942, he was shot down with his Spitfire over occupied France. Although he was surrounded by Germans after an emergency landing in a field, he managed to
escape. A Czechoslovak pilot in a British uniform turned into an infantryman and, with the help of French villagers, then into a civilian, who was able to pass through France to the Pyrenees, overcome them and end his month-long pilgrimage in Spain. To the surprise of his friends, who have already mentally said goodbye to him and sorted through his belongings, he returns to England and gets on the plane again. Knight of the War Sky František Fajtl was not large in stature. This was advantageous for the tight cabin of the Spitfires. However, he is undoubtedly a great figure in the human struggle for freedom. Zdeněk Svěrák
