Commissioner Kurt Wallander's wife left him, his daughter doesn't communicate much with him, and his father is falling into senility. Feelings of exhaustion and doom culminate in an early morning trip to a seemingly routine case on a lonely farm. In the middle of a frosty January morning, a shocking crime scene awaits him: an old man brutally murdered and his wife almost suffocated by a noose with a strange knot. However, the only testimony of the old woman, who succumbs to her injuries in the hospital, remains the word: "stranger". When the discovered information is leaked to the media, Wallander has to deal not only with unknown perpetrators, but also with a xenophobic wave of violence against the residents of the local refugee camp.
