František and Florián, two boys from the Czech hinterland, coincidentally reach the border region of the Ore Mountains shortly after the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic. One longs for an adventurous life, the other comes with his family out of compulsion. He settles in the small village of Chaloupky and tries to get used to a new life in the mountains and among the local residents. However, only two Czech families live in the entire village, the rest of the population is German. And although in the interwar period people get along well and are used to helping each other, with the rising wave of aggressive nationalism, they quickly take the established order in the borderlands as their own. So far reasonable people become enemies and in the newly formed Sudetenland no Czech is safe anymore...
