Alcoholic Memoirs
The harrowing literary confession of a famous author is surprisingly a story about alcohol. In it, Jack London describes his experiences with drinking from his teenage years as a sailor to the time when he became a rich and successful writer. He captured all sorts of moments in it, from bar fury to the desperate drowning of a drunkard in the ocean, basically coming to terms with death.
Not surprisingly, the book undermined his reputation as a pure adventurer and successful author of legendary books.
In it, he writes about his fascination with alcohol, but his story is primarily a warning. Jack London was convinced that he had his addiction under control, but his tragic death from a morphine overdose at the age of forty was the result of a losing battle with alcohol.
