A novel about the transience of time and the immutability of human lives
An old house on the main street a little below the square in a small town in the Highlands seems to have its own memory. The destinies of its inhabitants have been recorded in its walls since 1695, and the house has a lot to tell. And so he tells. Especially at the end of the nineteenth century, when a knitting workshop started operating there, which later became a large and still functioning factory. About the courageous young man Josef Vlkovský, who opened a grocery store here in 1925. About the rapid rise of trade, the opening of wholesale trade, but also about war restrictions, family tragedy, nationalization and confiscation of property. The house tells its own story, intertwined with the tragic fate of the director of the textile factory Knop, and continues through new beginnings and changes in the nineties to the present day. Time passes, the house with the shop "U Vlků" remains. Through the student Anežka, the present is reconciled with the past.
Markéta Hejkalová gradually uncovers the strong destinies of the inhabitants of the region in the middle of our country against the background of the story of the history of one house.
