French countryside at the end of the 19th century. An environment full of superstitions, prejudices, gossip and distrust of "immigrants". A run-down estate run by ex-lawyer André Trevillon without enthusiasm, with a handful of servants and a disabled son. This is what a place looks like where a young woman fleeing from an endangered home takes refuge in distress.
