The family of the counts of Harrach made a mark in Czech and Moravian history and landscape more than is generally known. Its history dates back to 1272, when brothers from the South Bohemian village of "Horachy" are listed as witnesses to a deed of donation by the Rosenbergs in favor of the Vyšebrod monastery. The Czech family then branched out into the Austrian lands and its name changed to "from Harrach". The Harrachs were successful entrepreneurs and thoughtfully built textile factories. The pearl of their business was the famous glassworks in Harrachov. Count Jan Nepomuk was one of the great Czech patriots and patrons. He contributed to the development of tourism and nature protection in the Krkonoše mountains and the introduction of skis in the Czech lands.
