After the sudden death of his master, Major Thorkildsen, his loyal canine friend Tassen is left alone with Mrs. Thorkildsen. Each of them copes with the tragedy in their own way: Tassen overeats on delicacies and Mrs. T. falls into drinking. But their days together start to become more pleasant when they spend time in the family library, where they read together about Roald Amundsen's adventurous expedition to the South Pole and his pack of intrepid dogs... Unfortunately, their peace is unexpectedly disturbed by the arrival of Mrs. T's son and daughter-in-law.
