In the central Bohemian town of Brod, municipal elections are approaching and it seems that nothing can disrupt their progress. But the arrival of the new teacher Jakub Stehlík will uncover many shadows from the past.

Who was responsible for the death of Jakub's mother? What does mayor Jaroslav Jiroušek have to do with her? Who in Brod should this act not be forgotten? How does the family of the owner of the bakery Mrs. Řábková fit into all this? What does the rabbit's foot in the trumpet case mean, and what secret does the horticultural colony behind the city hide? And what is the opposition led by Ivo Podroužek capable of doing for success?

Teacher Josefína Divíšková is trying to get to the bottom of the events that happened in Brod more than thirty years ago, and thereby help to redress old grievances. He has to rely on his wit and ability to manage everything with humor, as well as on the quirky commissioner Tvrdík.
