The old priest died the most elegant death. His arms were crossed over his chest, his eyes were squeezed shut, and someone had shoved something into his mouth. It looked like a roll of curled paper. This gave the dead man a disturbingly furious appearance, as if he had decided to have one last cigarette after death.

A dry First Autumn has invaded Ankh-Morpork, the largest city in Flat Earth. Sir Samuel Elánius and his City Watch are on the alert again, because in the foggy streets there are secrets that need to be solved. Can the constables and the commander-in-chief make it before another defenseless old man jumps? And who really bothers the peasants so much? To top it all off, golem suicides are increasing in the city and someone tried to murder a patrician. The patrol embarks on a search, though at first they have no idea how high the stakes are. Apparently, one of its members is involved in the plot - and to make matters worse, the troubles within the unit are escalating...
