The handsome young nobleman Dorian Gray befriends the painter Basil Hallward, who is completely captivated by Dorian's looks. He begins to paint a portrait of his friend, but in the course of this work, Dorian Gray succumbs to the influence of the painter's friend, Lord Henry. He instills in Dorian the idea that the painting remains eternally beautiful, while his model ages and decays. Therefore, Dorian wishes that his portrait begins to age instead of himself. And so, while Dorian still maintains a handsome face, both advancing age and each of Dorian's sins begin to take their toll on his image...
Although the novel takes place in the London of the Victorian era, with its criticism of self-centeredness, complacency and indifferent superficiality, it certainly touches today's society as well.
