The story takes you through the life of Odile Souchetová to Paris in the late 1930s and the difficult time of the Nazi occupation, and then to Montana at the end of the Cold War, where it intertwines with the life of Lily, a girl from a small American town.

Both women are united by their love of books, reading and French, which are not only the key to their wonderful friendship, but also to the entire novel. Neither of them has any idea from the beginning that they have much more in common than it seems at first glance.
