The Rohans belonged to the most important French noble families. From their ranks came prominent military leaders and supporters of the arts, four Strasbourg bishops and several governesses of the royal children. After the outbreak of the Great French Revolution, they left France and entered the military service of the Habsburgs. In 1820, they bought the Sychrov castle, which became their main residence. They built a large estate in northern Bohemia, on which they supported cultural and industrial development. Prince Kamil Rohan Sychrov rebuilt it into a masterpiece of Neo-Gothic architecture. Rohanová's book describes both the history of the family in France and the fate of its members settled in Bohemia.
