Berlin and all of Germany are rising from the ruins. The incinerators are still smoking, but people are trying to start over. Despite the nightmares, everyone is trying to come to terms with the past.
Words and Miracles is a book about the Klinger family with an ancient bookselling tradition. A young woman, Ruth, tries to resurrect the Klinger Bookstore to new life. Founded by her father, it burned down in the war and she is working hard to restore it.
They were left alone with their son Petřík, their still optimistic sister-in-law Ruth and their mother Alžběta, who lost her husband and son in the war and withdrew into seclusion. Against the background of Berlin that has just been divided and the struggles between the occupying powers, everyday human stories take place.
The girl Lore, who appeared unseen in front of their door, hides a painful secret. The beautiful Róza falls in love with the brother of her missing husband, it is a dangerous and complicated relationship, just like all the ones the war messed with. Ruth, Róza and Lore work together to build a bookstore.
When everyone starts doing well, Ruth's impoverished husband, who unexpectedly returns from a prison camp, stops at the door.
But an unprecedented boom is taking place in Berlin. And Lore gets a revolutionary idea to give bookstores a new direction.
