Scotland Yard Inspector Benjamin Ross is called to Newgate Prison by a man sentenced to death. Ben doesn't expect to believe his testimony. But the account of the murder, which this man witnessed sixteen years ago, is so believable that Inspector Ross cannot help but wonder if there is some truth in what the condemned man is saying. It's too late to postpone the execution of the condemned man, but it's not too late to investigate a murder that went unsolved for years, although convincing his superiors to allow Ross to take up the "lost case" will prove extremely difficult.
