Inspector Gavin Cain is overseeing the collection of a coffin in a San Francisco cemetery when he is suddenly recalled to the local town hall. What could be more important than a case where someone seems to have been burying more than just corpses? However, Mayor Castelli is of a different opinion - he has just received an envelope with photos of an unknown girl, obviously under the influence of drugs, and a letter telling him to stop or his wife and daughter will find out what happened. Castelli says he has no idea what's going on. A few days later, however, he is found with a gunshot wound to the head. And in one coffin, in addition to the deceased, he discovers the body of a young woman, apparently alive, even before the lid closed over her...
