The peaceful life of Countess Sofia di Corsi in a medieval mansion among the olive groves of Tuscany is marked by war and in 1943 the unexpected arrival of German soldiers. A young woman sympathizes with the resistance and desperately tries to help her friends in the village. She hides her efforts from her husband, Lorenzo, who fears for the family's safety. When Maxine, an American woman of Italian descent, arrives in the village to help the resistance, the two women form an uneasy alliance.
