They enjoy life in Amsterdam to the fullest until Carmen is diagnosed with cancer. From day to day, their life changes from one never-ending party to a trip to doctors and hospitals. While Carmen undergoes chemotherapy and radiation, the hedonist Stijn throws himself into the Amsterdam nightlife and into the arms of women. The novel describes, without pathos or false sentiment, a fatal and incurable disease that struck a young married couple in the prime of life like a bolt from the blue. The author tells his story straightforwardly, without embellishments, he does not hide anything. At the same time, however, these tragic moments are depicted with a peculiar black humor. Depressing situations in the hospital alternate with painful moments of the course of the disease and the severely tested strength of the relationship between the two young people.
