Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her tirelessly digging partner Thomas Cresswell board the luxury ocean liner RMS Etruria and set sail for America to investigate another case. Seven nights of circus entertainment await them on the ship - including a performance by a young up-and-coming variety artist, an escapist. This promises a welcome distraction in anticipation of the joyless case work that awaits Audrey with Thomas and her uncle in America. But the journey soon goes awry and the ship turns into a made-up house of horrors - when the bodies of dead young women are found on board.
