That's not stupid!” Joyce argued. "I saw a murder! She saw!”
Ariadne Oliver found herself at a teenage Halloween party quite by accident, but many know that she is a famous author of detective stories. One of the invited girls - perhaps to gain attention - therefore confides to those present that she once saw a murder, but understandably no one believes her. The program of the party, which takes place in a stately house in the town of Woodleigh Common, includes, for example, a competition for the best decorated broom, a cake made of pressed flour is cut for half a shilling, girls look into mirrors in the hope of seeing the face of their groom, and children compete in pairs in fishing for apples with the mouth from a bucket filled with water. At the end of the successful celebration, however, it turns out that Joyce has disappeared. When her corpse is found in the library, a distraught Mrs. Oliver immediately seeks out her friend Hercule Poirot to help her solve the death of the boastful young lady.
Even in the successful TV adaptation with David Suchet, the character of au pair Olga Seminoff appears. The model for it was a teacher from Prachatice, with whom Agatha Christie corresponded for many years.
