Deep in the Šumava woods, on the Czech-German border, in the middle of the forest near Bodenmais, lives a man who can communicate with animals. A forest man with a bear figure, a beard, wearing a green felt hat and often with a squirrel or a marten on his shoulder - Wolfgang Schreil is an impressive personality. They call him the charmer of animals or the wolf of the forest. No one gets as close to wild animals in nature as he does: he often stands face to face with deer and lynx, he is not afraid of poisonous snakes, he photographs a hunting ermine or hawk at close range, and deer or roe deer calmly graze right next to him. For him, the forest means the greatest possible safety and real freedom.
