He rose from the dead in the summer of 1975 near a Mediterranean island, where a fishing barge fished him out, shot and with no memory. When the local bankrupt doctor puts him back together, he is revealed to have a Swiss bank account number sewn under his skin. A visit to a Zurich bank tells the hero with amnesia that he probably made a living as the Bourne killer, Jason Bourne, whose trauma would make even James Bond short. Why is it that he knows so many languages and coolly faces all the pitfalls, but does not remember the details of his previous life, because of which he has hordes of armed gorillas on his neck? What is the Treadstone 71st company, how is it related to the war in Vietnam or the internationally wanted terrorist Carlos? With the Canadian Maria, who was his first hostage when escaping from Zurich, Jason runs for his life and unravels a nefarious intelligence game. After all, if he doesn't want to keep hearing things and accusations he doesn't understand, he has to unleash even more hell...
The novel was loosely adapted into the film Agent Without a Past (2002) directed by Doug Liman and starring Matt Damon and Franka Potente. However, the film, also shot in Prague, was set in the espionage era after the Cold War. A more faithful psychological version was offered in 1988 by Roger Young's two-part miniseries with Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith.
